Brintex was formed in 1963, having momentarily been called The
British International Exhibition Company. The company was created
through a joint venture between the Hemming Group and the Thomson
Organisation, the then publishers of the Times and the Sunday Times
as well as several trade titles. Harold Hemming, our Chairman at
that time, approached the Thomson Organisation to create a
joint-venture exhibition company to support the Hemming Group's
publications. John Hemming, Harold's son, was appointed Managing
Director.
The new company's first major event was the Public Works and
Municipal Services Exhibition at Olympia. The subsequent portfolio
of events included shows in womenswear, construction and mining. In
1978 Thomson sold its stake to the Hemming Group, which owns
Brintex today. Malcolm Taylor, now Managing Director, joined in
1979, the year, which also saw the company embark on its first
overseas event, The World Mining Equipment Exhibition, held in
Istanbul. Over the next 30 years Brintex launched events in the UK
and abroad including Hong Kong, France, Switzerland and the
USA.
Today, Brintex is one of the UK's leading trade exhibition
organisers. Its flagship event, the London International Wine Fair,
attracts more than 20,000 people to ExCeL each year and is often
described as the most important event of its kind in the world
today. We also continue to support our publications with events for
the local government, traffic management, lingerie and the
engineering sectors.
